The Wildwoods, NJ – May 27, 2022 – The Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority (GWTIDA) joined state, county, local and city officials, guest speakers, and over 300 elementary school children to officially ‘unlock’ the Wildwoods beaches for the summer 2022 season.
The International Kite Festival, the largest Kite Festival in North America, was simultaneously launched over the Wildwoods beaches. Colorful kites served as a backdrop, and children of all ages joined in on the fun, launching the kites they made earlier that morning during a children’s Kite Making Workshop inside the Wildwoods Convention Center. The Kite Festival will be flying all weekend and wraps up on Monday, May 27 with the Indoor Kite Competition inside the Convention Center.
Immediately following the unlocking, GWTIDA and Wildwood Crest Mayor Don Cabrera, Wildwood Mayor Pete Byron, and North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello launched the all-new Wildwoods Island Shuttle, starting service Memorial Day Weekend. The Shuttles, provided by the Jitney Association transportation service company, are adorned with the Wildwoods logo featured prominently on the vehicles, making it easy for visitors to identify them. With 13 available seats on each shuttle, and multiple stops running from 5 p.m. through 2:30 a.m., the shuttles will provide ‘on-demand’ transportation services for visitors and residents alike. All shuttles will be ADA compliant with wheelchair lifts installed on each.
The Wildwoods Island Shuttle began service on May 26, starting with weekends-only service Memorial Day Weekend through Sunday, June 19. Service will transition to a daily route Monday, June 20 through Labor Day, Monday, September 5, with shuttles returning to weekend-only service Friday, September 9 through Saturday, October 22.
A free app, Jitney Surfer, can be downloaded from Google Play and the Apple App store – it allows riders to pay for their fares to ride the shuttle, view a map of shuttle routes and see real-time locations of each shuttle. The cost to ride will be $3 per person one-way. Service will be ‘Stop on Demand’ for the entire route and run from 5 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. starting at the far southern end of Wildwood Crest to 26th Street and the Boardwalk, then continue through North Wildwood to the Olde New Jersey Avenue Entertainment District.
